Once again the musical production of Oliver is being performed in London’s West End. The musical is based on the 19th century novel about an orphaned boy written. The novel, Oliver Twist, written by Charles Dickens, provides the basis for both the plot and name of the musical. Within the production the audience learns of the struggles of this poor boy living in a workhouse where the children are deprived of food and worked to the bone.
The famous words, “please sir, I’d like some more”, uttered by the brave Oliver is the beginning of the rocky journey that the young boy finds himself on. The boy if sold to an undertaker where he is teased and bullied before finally being locked inside a coffin. His escape leads him into the hands of the Artful Dodger who takes him to meet Fagan, a notorious crook.
The story continues with songs such as “You’ve got to pick a penny or Two” whereby he is made to steal from unsuspecting citizens of London. Oliver’s fortune looks set to change as wealthy gentleman takes a liking to him, however, Oliver’s struggles do not end there as the drama continues throughout the musical.
It is possible to secure cheap Oliver tickets but you mist be prepared to book well in advance as the show is still one of the most popular in the West End.
